To pay a visit to the city of Nara, Japan, is to take a tour of some of the country's oldest history. Nara's history extends as far back as the early 8th century, when in 710 A.D., the great Fujiwara family established their imperial court. They built palaces and pagodas, shrines, and statues that, despite the destruction caused by fires, wars, weather, and time, continue to stand today as some of the world's grandest works of art and architecture. Nara's history as the ancient capital of Japan begins and ends with the Fujiwara family. After outgrowing the city of Fujiwara, the family made the move to Nara. The Empress took the throne for a few years, but eventually died, leaving Dokyo to try to ascend to the throne himself. The Fujiwara family were able to thwart him, and once they gained control, they decided it best to move their capital city away from the strong influence of Buddhist monks. Today, Nara is still one of the most important cultural centers of Japan. The National Museum is here, as well as Horyo-jo Otera, a temple said to be the oldest wooden building in the world. At the center of town is Nara Koen, or Nara Park. The beautiful, forested park is home to the sacred imperial deer. According to Shinto religion, these deer, who wander openly in the park, are considered the messengers of the gods.
