Bergamo is a "high and low" kind of town. The city itself is divided into Bergamo Bassa (lower) and Bergamo Alta (upper). Centrally situated (50 km northeast of Milan) in the Lombardia Region, Bergamo is a gateway to the Alps, as well as Italy's great Po Valley. Relatively modern, Basso is connected by a funicular railway to spectacular and historic Bergamo Alta, perched 400 meters above the plain, and considered to be one of Italy's loveliest hilltowns. Bergamo is the birthplace of Pope John XXIII -- a.k.a. Papa Giovanni, 1881-1963. Local particularities include a complex dialect (now spoken mainly by older natives of town), and the Bergamask Sheep-dog breed.
