Love golf? You'll be right at home on this laid-back but still luxurious island golf resort. Part of the Sea Island chain, Hilton Head was developed approximately 50 years ago by an Ohio native, who'd had the pristine piece of Low Country property in his family for generations. He developed it as a haven for his family, friends, and social contemporaries: easy to reach, relaxing, and still quite luxurious. Currently, Hilton Head has 24 golf courses, including Harbour Town Golf Links. Other island activities are mostly outdoorsy ones: Bike or walk on trails through old-growth trees, kayak on quiet inlets scented with indigenous sweetgrass, or fish the local streams.
