"City of Discovery" is how Dundee-folk describe their home. The story is told, too, of an unassuming Doctor Thomas Maclagan at the Dundee Royal Infirmary, who back in the 1860's noticed that bitter willow bark extracts cured his rheumatic fever patients -- a discovery that, subsequently refined, became known as aspirin. Scotland's fourth largest city is situated on the Tay estuary in a northeastern region known as Tayside. Landscape there ranges from sea coast to green hills and mountains. Dundee is around an hour away from Aberdeen and Glasgow. The phrase "Bonnie Dundee" refers more to the city's wide open harbour than to its architecture. But hey, local developers are busy "re-inventing" the downtown area. Speaking of old buildings, castles are also to be found in the surrounding countryside. Saturday in Dundee is offically football day, testimony to local sports passions, which include golf (the birthplace of the sport, St. Andrews, is nearby) and skiing.
