Strung along the south shore of the lower Fraser River and surrounded by mountains, Chilliwack took its name from a native word meaning, roughly, "as far as you can go." The term refers to a point on the Chilliwack River where rapids make further upstream travel impossible. But nobody ever said anything about downstream travel - at least, not to the whitewater kayakers and rafters who head to the Chilliwack for summer thrills. Otherwise, recreation in Chilliwack is generally of the quieter type: museums and community sports, golf, fishing and camping. Just north of the Washington state border, the city is home to a nearby Canadian military base (now closed) and, on the river flats, many dairy and agriculture operations. Logging and manufacturing are also important parts of the economy. Vancouver is only an hour's drive away along the Trans Canada Highway (given Vancouver's overheated real estate market, Chilliwack serves as a bedroom community for some commuters). And the nearby Fraser Valley towns of Agassiz, Mission, Abbotsford and Hope (where the first Rambo movie was filmed) have close links to Chilliwack.
