Even today, more than 35 years after the first "Free Speech" rallies kicked off an entire era of student protest, Berkeley's Telegraph Avenue and the neighborhoods around the U.C. Berkeley campus buzz with an energy that seems to have passed through the decades undiluted. People's Park is still the center of Berkeley's counterculture. And it does remain a counterculture. The University of California Board of Regents -- never too keen on the whole "revolution" thing -- owns the park and squares off on an ongoing basis against the grassroots group trying to take the park back. As recently as 1991 the park was the site of a riot when the university installed a volleyball court. On the less tumultuous side, a pulsating local music and arts scene continues to flourish in Berkeley's atmosphere of possibility. And the University -- the flagship of California's top-notch public higher education system -- remains one of the nation's best.
