Low Cost Hotels in Hilton Head Island ➤ Best Prices Guaranteed!

Love golf? You'll be right at home on this laid-back but still luxurious island golf resort. Part of the Sea Island chain, Hilton Head was developed approximately 50 years ago by an Ohio native, who'd had the pristine piece of Low Country property in his family for generations. He developed it as a haven for his family, friends, and social contemporaries: easy to reach, relaxing, and still quite luxurious. Currently, Hilton Head has 24 golf courses, including Harbour Town Golf Links. Other island activities are mostly outdoorsy ones: Bike or walk on trails through old-growth trees, kayak on quiet inlets scented with indigenous sweetgrass, or fish the local streams. If you're in the mood for chitchat, relax with friends at Coligny Plaza, or walk to the waterfront and meet the fishing boats coming in to sell their daily catch.
Why, you ask, does an island 12 miles long, 3 miles wide and home to fewer than 30,000 people need 23 golf courses? Well, when you've got 1.6 million people visiting each year you need to keep them busy. Golf is a major part of life on Hilton Head Island, located off the southern tip of South Carolina in what is known as the Low Country. In addition to being the vacation destination of all those recreational golfers, it is the site of the MCI Heritage Classic, an event on the PGA Tour. There's more to do than just putter around in HiltonHead. The resort has more than 200 tennis courts and a women's pro tournament (the Family Circle Magazine Cup),plus beaches, forest preserves, sailing, kayaking, fishing and horseback riding, as well as lots of old forts and old plantations. Oh yes, it also has electricity and telephone service, although those amenities didn't reach the island until 1951 and 1960, respectively. In fact, the island's population was only about 2,500 in 1970, and the town of Hilton Head wasn't incorporated until 1983. The growth has been phenomenal, with Beaufort County zooming from 65,000 inhabitants in 1980 to 99,800 in 1995.
