“This place was amazing. It was our anniversary and the proprietor was so kind. He spoke English well and our waiter worked on his while we worked on French. They made an appointment with a private museum near the village that was the highlight of our trip. They were beyond kind. The location was idyllic. The service was stellar. The facility was well kept. It was the perfect place to spend our first night in Belgium. I wish we had more time to stay. The food was unbelievable! The chef was a master.”
“The hotel rooms are in a modern annex, but with charm - each is named for one of the Chambertain wines and has its own interesting décor. Extremely comfortable and tasteful, and a bargain at the price! But the cuisine in the restaurant —"Le Charmes-Chambertin", located in a wonderfully restored 17th-18th century building—is amazing! The patron, Monsieur Roger Simul, is also the chef de cuisine. Inspired by Escoffier, he is a real gastronomic genius. A four-course meal with selected wines accompanying each course, and coffee afterwards, cost €84 per person. Not cheap, but very definitely value for money. Whew! We are very critical about food, and we have to say that we have never had a more delicious, subtly prepared, restaurant meal. The place is located in a pretty, rural hamlet outside of a small village to the east of Liège - great for our purposes in this instance, but perhaps not everyone's target.”
