As the capital of North Korea, or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Pyongyang is the headquarters of the nation's Communist Party as well as its economic, educational and cultural center. Located on the Taedong River in the northwestern part of the country, Pyongyang (population 2 million) is one of the oldest cities in Korea. The city has been built, destroyed and rebuilt many times dating to 2333 BC, when it was the site of an ancient capital. The most recent damage was during the Korean War (1950-53), but Pyongyang has been resurrected since then with Soviet and Chinese aid. Pyongyang features parks, wide avenues and large public buildings that reflect the Korean version of Communist architecture. Among them are the Palace of Culture, the Grand Theater and the Juche Tower. Other landmarks in the city include a huge bronze statue of a winged horse, the Central Historical Museum, the Gates of Pyongyang and the Arc of Triumph. Several temples dating to the seventh century have been rebuilt. Like the rest of North Korea, Pyongyang is not open to independent tourism.
