Shijiazhuang is a somewhat unlikely capital of northeast China's Hebei Province. The histories of prominent Chinese cities tend to be measured in thousands of years, but Shijiazhuang ("stone family village") grew up with the railroads after the 19th century Opium Wars. Its modern economy is driven by textile mills and electronics plants. The territory of Hebei Province arches around Beijing and Tianjin, with the Bohai sea on the east coast. Other Hebei tourist attractions include the Great Wall's eastern Shanhaiguan pass, called "the first pass under Heaven."
