Brittany is a land of contrasts. When its capital, Rennes, was razed by fire in 1720, the task of remodeling the city fell to Jacques Gabriel, a Parisian architect. Today, with its granite buildings, broad avenues and spacious squares, Rennes seems uncharacteristic of a province that is haunted with Celtic history and folklore, filled with the sound of the sea and strewn with Stonehenge-like ruins. Brittany's contrasts permeate even the language. Up and down the Atlantic coast, French is juxtaposed with the tongue-twisting glottal syllables of Breton, a language closely related to Welsh. Unified with France in 1532, Brittany has often been maintained as a colony by Paris. Today the people still tend to treat France as a separate country and a regional effort is afoot to gain official recognition for the local language.
