Prince Rupert was the turn-of-the-century dream of the general manager of the old Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, who wanted a deep sea Pacific port at the mouth of Skeena River. Charles Hays never saw his town grow (he went down with the Titanic), but Prince Rupert ultimately fluorished and is now the transport hub for B.C.'s north coast. Prince Rupert has also developed fishing and logging industries, but gets increasing attention these days because of the spectacular scenery in every direction. Mountains surround the city, and ferries take a steady flow of eco-tourists to the still largely untamed Queen Charlotte Islands and ancient settlements of the Haida Indians. And the city - set on Kaien Island - is also a good staging point for trips into Canadian national wilderness parks on the mainland and through the Alaska panhandle.
