Pondicherry is unusual in the country of India in that it is a union territory within a state. Many maps will show the territory as a separate city as well as a territory, often confusing visitors and scholars alike. The territory is located within the state of Tamil Nadu, about 160 km south of the city of Madras. The coastal area is best known for its Ashram, the Aurobindo Ashram, founded and built in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo. The Ashram practices, teaches and promotes integral yoga and continues to attract international visitors. Pondicherry is also the site of The Government Park, a botanical garden dating back to the days of Napoleon III. The gardens incorporate beautiful and exotic plants, many of them considered rare, and the Sama Koil church, which was formerly a Shiva temple. Pondicherry today resembles a Meditteranean French colony with quaint streets, elegant homes, gardens and hotels. Even the festivals of Pondicherry are reminiscent of its French heritage. Springtimes brings a Mardi Gras-like festival called "Masquerade," and on the Eve of Bastille Day, military veterans parade the streets in their best dress uniforms.
