Sundance Film Festival is Park City's most prominent claim to fame, but aside from the annual celeb-fest, this gorgeous little mountain town really gives the "get away from it all" feeling. Of three regional ski areas, Deer Valley is for skiers only, while Park City Mountain Resort and The Canyons are both snowboarder-friendly. Sleigh rides, bobsledding, and snowmobiling are a few of the other winter sports. In the summer, visit a historic mine, go fly-fishing, hike, bike, skateboard or, for an extra thrill, ride the Alpine Coaster and sled down the Alpine Slide. This town also hosted many 2002 Winter Olympics events luge, ski jumping, bobsled, nordic and whether it's winter or summer, Utah Olympic Park offers a combination of spectator sports and participatory ones, plus daily tours.
For a town that was included in the book "Ghost Towns of the West" in the 1950s, Park City is certainly alive enough now. With 7,500 year-round residents the city may not be a metropolis, but its three ski areas boast "the greatest snow on Earth." No wonder Park City was chosen as the site of the 2002 Winter Olympics. (Salt Lake City is officially the host city, but 26 of the 70 events are slated for Park City.) One focal point of the Olympics will be the Utah Winter Sports Park, which has four Nordic ski jumps and is one of the few places in the world where the public can take a ride on a bobsled. Situated at 7,000 feet in the Wasatch Mountains east of Salt Lake City, Park City boomed in the late 1800s as a silver-mining town and was home to as many as 10,000 people. The decline of silver mining turned Park City into a shell of its former self (although it never was a ghost town), but the ski industry pumped life back into the town. Main Street has been restored and now has 60 buildings on the National Register of Historic Victorian Places. A newer addition is Robert Redford's Sundance Institute, founded in 1981, and thousands flock to Park City each January for the glitz and glamor of the Sundance Film Festival.
