Considering the brainpower in Palo Alto, it's no surprise it was the first U.S. city to jump on the Internet. (It's rumored that the silicon in Silicon Valley actually sprung a leak here first, then worked its way toward San Jose.) Stanford also plays a central role in community spirit and recreation. The Stanford Cardinals have achieved nationwide recognition, winning titles in just about every sport and producing an impressive number of Olympic medalists, particularly swimmers. The city itself was named for a massive pair of redwoods ("tall tree") found growing on the banks of the San Francisquito Creek by Spanish settlers. Although only one of the trees still stands (the other was knocked down in a thunderstorm), the residents of Palo Alto have worked hard to preserve the environment around them. In fact, they bought up nearly half of the San Francisco Bay shoreline and designated it a public nature reserve called the Palo Alto Baylands. To those skeptics who say you can't mix big business with an environmental conscience, Palo Altoans say, "Balderdash."
