Nanaimo may not be the best-known city on Vancouver Island -- Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, can claim that distinction -- but Nanaimo is probably the most important urban centre. The Harbour City, as it's called, is the island's major retail, distribution, and transportation centre for the mid-Island region. Originally a collection of Coast Salish villages, Nanaimo became a Hudson's Bay Company trading post in the mid-1800s. Evidence from both historical periods can be seen at the native petroglyphs north of the city and at The Bastion, the only surviving HBC arsenal in North America. Today, visitors to Nanaimo can fish for salmon off a charter boat, bungy jump off a bridge, sea-kayak, cross-country or downhill ski, or explore Denman, Hornby, Newcastle or Gabriola islands, each of which is a short ferry ride away. If those activities are too tame, there's always the bathtub races.
