Middlesbrough is the commercial and cultural capital of Cleveland County. (If Cleveland only calls its US namesake to mind, that might be because it has only existed since 1974 as a county in northeast England.) Situated on the River Tees' south bank, seven miles in from the North Sea, Middlesbrough began as a coal port. It grew up with a railway connecting the nearby towns of Stockton and Darlington. The beautiful North Yorkshire coastline, York Moors National Park, and historic towns like Durham are features of the surrounding countryside. Visitors are also attracted to the annual Stockton Riverside International Festival -- "the largest street festival in Europe!" Middlesbrough is home to the University of Teeside, plenty of theatres, Captain Cook's Birthplace Museum, and the modern Middlesbrough Art Gallery. Its Town Hall hosts concerts ranging from rock to classical. Evidence of local sports passions are a new 30,000 seat football stadium and the Tees Barrage -- eleven miles of clean, tide-free river for recreation.
