Lausanne has a mix of Switzerland's rural and urban charm. The city of 250,000 is situated in the country's French speaking sector, about 45 minutes east of Geneva by rail. Rising from the north shore of spectacular Lac L?man (a.k.a. Important learning and research continues at the University of Lausanne (founded in the 16th century), as well as the Swiss Federal Insitute of Technology. Lausanne is also an Olympic city, sort of. The International Olympic Committee headquarters is here, featuring a lovely park and museum, and Lausanne serves as host for the 1997 World Figure Skating Championships.
