Knoxville, a historic Tennessee river town, is the gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park America's most visited national park, according to the National Park Service. As such, it's within easy access of 800 miles of hiking trails, plus river rafting, fishing, wildlife viewing (the park has 1,500 resident bears), and more. Attractions within the city include the Knoxville Zoological Gardens and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. One of the most popular things to do is a river cruise Tennessee Riverboat Company offers them several times daily. Nearby Pigeon Forge is home to Dollywood and the factory outlet mall. The Museum of Appalachia is in the tiny town of Clinton.
A couple of hours up the Tennessee River from Chattanooga stands Knoxville, "Gateway to the Smokies" and site of the 1982 World's Fair. The golden globe built for the fair still dominates the city's skyline. UT Knoxville is the University of Tennessee, and both the city and state are devoted to their school. During football season, fans clad in orange shirts and bizarre orange and white hats gather at Neyland Stadium to cheer on their beloved Vols with a zeal born of true fanaticism. In early spring, a 50-mile trail of blooming dogwoods transforms the city. The Knoxville Museum of Art, historic Laurel Theatre and Jubilee Community Arts program provide cultural oases. The city also enjoys an economic and technological link to the nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Knoxville is a mere 40 miles from the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Rushing streams, Clingman's Dome, the Appalachian Trail and the hushed beauty of Cades Cove are just a short drive away. Those with less of an outdoorsy bent can shop the factory outlets in nearby Pigeon Forge and the specialty shops in Gatlinburg, or spend the day in Dollywood, a combination amusement park/craftsman's showcase/country music shrine.
