Don't confuse this Frankfurt (otherwise known as Frankfurt am Main) with Germany's other Frankfurt (Frankfurt an der Oder). This city lies on the Main River near where it joins the Rhine, and has grown into an international industrial and financial center. It is also the birthplace (yes, you guessed it) of the frankfurter. The German Central Bank and the European Monetary Institute are in Frankfurt, and the House of Rothschild, Europe's biggest private bank, grew from a small money lending shop here. The city was also a publishing center in the early days of printing; Johann Gutenberg is honored with a monument in the city square. Frankfurt dates to the 1st century, and it has played an important role in German history. Unfortunately, nearly all of the city's historic buildings were destroyed during World War II, including the birthplace of the poet Goethe and the Stadel Art Institute. Both were rebuilt, however, and they are two of the city's top tourist attractions. The Senckenberg Museum of Natural History is another site well worth the vistit. Today, chemicals and heavy machinery are the focus of manufacturing in Frankfurt (pop. 625,000). It is also the site of major international trade fairs and of a major international airport.
