Situated high up in the Himalayas, in India's state of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamsala has been made famous by the presence of one man: His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet. Since 1960, the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government have made their base in Dharamsala, a former British hill station, where they work to bring about a peaceful solution with China. China has occupied Tibet since 1949. Dharamsala, is really separated into an upper and lower town. There's not much to see in the lower town of Dhramsala: a few hotels, some restaurants, a bank, and the bus depot. The Kangra Art Museum is its largest cultural attraction and houses a very small collection of miniature paintings, dating from the 17th century, and belonging to the Kangra school of art. The upper town is known as McLeod Ganj, and it's here amid the backdrop of the sheer rock face of the Dhauladhar, where most Tibetans live. At the heart of McLeod Ganj is the Tibetan temple, lined with huge prayer wheels spinning away. Within walking distance are the Dalai Lama's residence, the Tushita Retreat Center, the Tibetan Government in Exile Offices and the Tibetan Library. Most visitors, which number into the thousands each year, stay in McLeod Ganj. Many of them are devout Buddhists, while a fair share are also curious Western tourists. March is the most popular month to come, as this is when the Dalai Lama gives his public lectures. Dharamsala is also a popular point to begin treks across the Dhauladhar range. These treks can be extremely arduous and you should be accompanied by an experienced, local guide.
