You may think of tea when you hear the name Darjeeling. To be sure, the region surrounding this West Bengali city produces some of the world's finest (and most expensive) teas. But the gateway to the Indian state of Sikkim and the Himalaya is no longer a stomping grounds for the Raj and the British East India Company. Today, trekkers and mountaineers flock to this former British hill resort on route to the highest mountains in the world. Darjeeling proper is best explored on foot; in fact, much of it is closed to vehicles. The city's heart, the Chowrasta, a large, bustling promenade, is the place to go for shopping, pony rides and access to the bustling bazaar on Hill Cart Road. Must-see places include the folk art center at Haden Hall and the monastery atop Observatory Hill, with its incredible view of Sikkim and its streams of Buddhist prayer flags. If you're in the mood for some billiards, badminton or even roller skating, drop by the Gymkhana Club, a Raj-era institution. Appropriately enough, Darjeeling is home to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, the country's most important training center for Indian climbers. Founded by Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, a Darjeeling native who successfully climbed Everest in 1953, the Institute houses a museum dedicated to the history of mountaineering. Since the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1949, Darjeeling has served as a refuge for Tibetan exiles. The city's Tibetan Self-Help Center, founded in 1959, houses around 700 refugees, most of whom make Tibetan handicrafts, such as clothing, hats and exquisitely embroidered Tibetan boots, the sale of which assists this displaced community.
