Chelyabinsk, the capital of the Southern Ural region, has, sadly, gained most of its modern fame from its misfortune. The first episode actually lasted a decade, when, beginning in 1951, the nearby Mayak weapons plant began dumping waste from nuclear bomb production into a small lake. Since the fall of Communism, the truth about the tragedy of the Southern Urals has come to light, and concerted environmental clean-up efforts are underway. Chelyabinsk, which evolved into a trading center after it was founded as a fortress in 1736, is a major industrial center, with factories turning out military equipment and metal parts. Beyond the chilling nuclear tour, visitors can also view more serene sights, including the Applied Art Museum, the Geology Museum, and the magical Victor Plotnikov Theater.
