Chandigarh is unusual in the country of India in that it is actually the capital of two states: Punjab and Haryana. Built in 1953, the city is administered by the central government of India. Chandigarh is the sixth most densely populated area of India with over 640,000 residents. Much of the city was designed and built by the French architect Le Corbusier, his brother Pierre Jinert and help from U.K's Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew as well as numerous Indian architects. The city, barely 45 years old, is modern in architectural style and culture. Visitors to Chandigarh will want to visit the Secretariat building, one of Le Corbusier's designs, and take in the spectacular view of the city from its rooftops. Other sites of interest are the colorful Rock Gardens, Sukhna Lake, Punjab University, the famous Zakir Gulab Bag Rose Gardens (30 acres of roses!) and the city's Museum and Art Gallery. For those less inclined to tourist attractions, Chandigarh has a well designed shopping center.
