Founded in 25 B.C. by Roman Emporer Augustus, Aosta is the capital of Italy's far northwest Valle d'Aosta Region. The city has been called Rome of the Alps, and an ancient fortifying wall surrounds the town. Walkers will love Aosta, as no cars are allowed in the city. Walks should be taken to the Roman ruins, the Convent of San Giuseppe, and the charming arched bridge over the Buthier River.
