Native sons Impressionist Paul Cezanne and novelist Emile Zola would recognize Aix-en-Provence today. Few towns are as well preserved as the former capital of Provence. The heart of Aix, Cours Mirabeau, a graceful avenue flanked with cafes, boutiques and intertwining plane trees, divides Aix's old quarter into two, with narrow medieval streets winding to the north and 17th- and 18th-century mansions to the south. The Romans were drawn to Aix by its thermal springs. The town's name originates from Aquae Sextiae (the waters of Sextius) in honor of the consul who reputedly founded Aix in 122 BC. Cezanne immortalized the town and its surrounding Provencal countryside with his paintbrush. Fans can visit the artist's studio at the Mus?e-Atelier de Paul Cezanne, which remains as he left it at the time of his death in 1906, scattered with his pipe, clothing, and other personal possessions. Although Marseille is the administrative capital of Provence, many would argue that this town of 125,000 is the region's cultural capital. With its hillsides of lavender and wild thyme, red-tile roofs, vineyards and afternoon siestas, Provencal life tends toward an old-fashioned pace. Locals will point out that elegant Aix more accurately epitomizes the Provencal douceur de vivre (sweetness of life).
