The Vikings founded Aalborg where the Limfjord, the great waterway of northern Jutland, is at its narrowest. The city has a charming 16th-century look and a hearty nightlife; the local brew flows in quantity at Jomfru Ane Gade, a tiny cobblestone street in the center of Aalborg, where 400-year-old buildings house inns, pubs and cafes. Aalborg's major sites include R?dhus Torv (Town Hall Square) and the elaborate, five-story Jens Bangs Stenhus (Jens Bang's Stone House) built in 1624. The Baroque cathedral, the Budolfi Kirke, is dedicated to the English saint Butolph, and the 15th-century Helligandsklosteret (Monastery of the Holy Ghost) is one of Denmark's best-preserved sites. With its 160,000 inhabitants, Aalborg is Denmark's fourth largest city and one of the country's most important trade and industrial centers.
