Known during British rule as Port Florence, Kisumu is Kenya's third largest city, with a population of around 150,000. Perched on the lip of Lake Victoria, the city has long been one of Kenya's anchor cities. The Uganda Railway, which gave birth to the much younger city of Nairobi a century ago, was built to span the nation from Port Florence to Mombasa.
