To be fair to Phoenix, one can't look simply at what's within its city borders. This metropolis actually spans 22 cities, including tony Scottsdale, snowbird favorite Mesa, and Glendale, home of the Arizona Cardinals NFL team. From its origin as a farming hamlet called Pumpkinville in the 1860s, Phoenix has grown to become the urban center of the American Southwest. Engulfing neighboring towns like Tempe and Scottsdale, the metro area now covers around 500 square miles of the aptly named Valley of the Sun, a segment of the Sonoran Desert where summer temperatures regularly surpass 110 degrees F. In addition to air-conditioned indoor pursuits, like theater, opera, concerts and the outstanding Heard Museum, the outdoors also lures visitors, with more than 100 golf courses and hiking among the red rocks and saguaros of Camelback Mountain, right in the center of the city.
