The town of Nakuru, in Western Kenya, about a 100 miles west of Nairobi, is an agricultural and trade center, where farmers come to sell their goods at local markets. Notmuch of a tourist hotspot in and of itself, this small community has, of late, become a destination of Kikuyu refugees fleeing the conflicts in the Rift Valley. Mega-colonialist Lord Delamere is credited with the development of Nakuru; he purchased six hundred square kilometers of land in the area, attracting English settlers to the region. Nakuru's main claim to fame is its proximity (eight miles) to the spectacular Lake Nakuru National Park, home to millions of pink flamingoes. The national park was created in large part as a preserve to protect the photogenic birds. The lake was tainted in recent years by polluting chemicals from a nearby factory, causing an ecological disaster that led many of the flamingoes to fly away to Lake Bogoria. But the subsequent clean-up has attracted many of the birds back. The park is also famous for its four-legged wildlife, including primates such as baboons and colobos monkeys, as well as giraffes, gazelle and waterbuck. Another nearby natural wonder, the extinct Menengai crater (the volcano looms over Nakuru), is a popular attraction for hikers. It takes about three hours to reach the rim on foot from the town, or you can drive to the top. Either way, the rim offers spectacular views of Lake Bogoria to the north and Lake Nakuru to the south. The volcano is famous as the site of a 19th century Masai-Ilaikipiak battle over, among other things, grazing rights to the Rift Valley.
