Lausanne has a mix of Switzerland's rural and urban charm. The city of 250,000 is situated in the country's French speaking sector, about 45 minutes east of Geneva by rail. The International Olympic Committee headquarters is here, featuring a lovely park and museum, and Lausanne serves as host for the 1997 World Figure Skating Championships.
