Hamburg has been Germany’s largest port since the 13th century, when it was center of the North Sea’s Hanseatic League of trading cities. Today it’s Germany’s second-largest city, a bustling port built on lakes, marshes and the Elbe River. Hamburg has over 2,300 bridges, and its old warehouse district and harbor are Venice-like networks of canals. Hamburg has few skyscrapers and its important landmarks are churches, notably St. Michaelis Church with its distinctive spire and gilt interior. A destination of a different sort, the Reeperbahn -- the city’s entertainment and red light district, with bustling bars and clubs -- helped launch the Beatles in the 1960s.
Hamburgers did indeed get their start in Hamburg (originally under the name "Hamburg steak"), but the sandwich is more American than German, and Hamburg is more haute cuisine than fast-food. It is known for its museums and for its musical tradition, not for its McDonald's. Germany's second-largest city (pop. 1.6 million), Hamburg constitutes one of the country's 16 states. It is Germany's largest and busiest port, even though it is 75 miles inland from the North Sea on the Elbe River in north-central Germany. Founded by Charlemagne, who built a fortress here in 808, Hamburg became the basis for the Hanseatic League of merchant cities. Despite devastation by fire in 1842 and bombings in World War II, Hamburg is loaded with historic buildings, including five rebuilt churches. Among the museums are the Kunsthalle art gallery, the Altonaer Museum specializing in north German subjects and the Oevelgonne Museumshafen (Harbor Museum). The Staatsoper, which dates from 1678, is the site of opera and ballet, and the Musikhalle is the focus of the city's other musical events. Composers Felix Mendelssohn and Johannes Brahms were born in Hamburg. Altstadt (Old Town), site of a medieval settlement, sits at the center of Hamburg. The Deichstrasse is a historic street lined with buildings dating from the 17th century. The Ubersee-Zentrum is the world's largest roofed warehouse.
