Even if you've never been to the quaint old city of Delft, you've probably seen the elaborate blue-and-white porcelain that bears its name. Delftware dates back to the 17th century, and it remains as popular as ever, drawing visitors to the city to tour De Porceleyne Fle (the factory visitors center) to view the manufacturing process and buy up souvenir pieces. Situated on the Vliet River, the city looks today much as it did in 1660, when Johannes Vermeer captured his hometown on canvas in his "View of Delft." The narrow canals, with their picturesque bridges, still traverse the city. And the Markt, the Market Square where Vermeer lived, remains today an urban centerpiece. On the east side of the square stands another old landmark, the Nieuwe Kerk, the medieval church where Dutch rulers are traditionally buried. On a clear day, the view from the church's elegant tower stretches all the way to The Hague. Not all of Delft has survived the ages, however; in 1654, gunpowder hidden beneath the city exploded, killing 200 and destroying a third of Delft's dwellings. Less than a centuryearlier, in 1584, another destructive blow was dealt the city when the nation's founder, William the Silent, was assassinated here. Today, a kinder, gentler explosion has again transformed the Delft landscape: Tourism has become a core industry, with visitors crowding the narrow streets and canals to view the picture-perfect brick buildings with their tiled roofs. Oh, yeah, and they sometimes stop to buy that pottery, too.
