Native sons Impressionist Paul Cezanne and novelist Emile Zola would recognize Aix-en-Provence today. Few towns are as well preserved as the former capital of Provence. Although Marseille is the administrative capital of Provence, many would argue that this town of 125,000 is the region's cultural capital. With its hillsides of lavender and wild thyme, red-tile roofs, vineyards and afternoon siestas, Provencal life tends toward an old-fashioned pace.
