Situated at Asia's geographic center, Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China's most spacious province, covering one-sixth of the nation's land area. Much of that northwestern terrain is mountain and desert, and the region's ethnic and religious passions are evident in the native Eastern Turkistan separatist movement. And if you have to beat it back to Beijing, China's longest express train sprints the entire 4,000 km from Urumqi.
