Yinchuan was founded in 1958 as the capital of north-central China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Situated on the Yellow River's upper and middle reaches, with Inner Mongolia along its northern border, Ningxia is home to a little over 4 million people. A third of them are Hui, descendants of Moslems who came to China 700 years ago (Ningxians are granted freedom to practice the Islamic religion). Yinchuan was the capital of Western Xia for 190 years, before Genghis Kahn demolished that ancient nation. Its historic relics, however, include nine imperial tombs, pagodas, and a canal system linking the city to the Yellow River. Yinchuan is known for its high quality sheepskins and charm. The five-domed Nanguan Mosque and the Shahu Lake attract tourists to the city. Local recreational pursuits include sand-sliding down Shapatou Hill, and sheepskin raft rides on the Yellow River.
