Known as "Little Shanghai," Wuxi is situated in Jiangsu Province, 130 km east of the real Shanghai. For most of its 3,000 year history, Wuxi was content to be a country town of southeast China's lower Yangtze Delta, but the plans of other people got in the way. Taihu Lake a few miles south of town is Wuxi's main tourist attraction. One of China's five largest lakes, Taihu covers 1,500 square miles. Its waters and beautiful shoreline gardens have inspired poets and painters throughout the centuries.
