A city founded as a fortress, Belgrade has been a near-constant site of conflict for hundreds of years, continuing into the 1990s with civil unrest following the breakup of Yugoslavia. It has been destroyed and rebuilt an estimated 40 times. The old part of the city of more than 1.5 million people lies on the promontory where the Danube and Sava rivers meet. Ruins of the ancient fort remain there as part of a park and military museum called Kalemegdan. Belgrade was the harbor for Rome's Danubian fleet and was later held by the Byzantines, Bulgars and Serbs. In the 16th century, it was a major fortress of the Ottoman Turks, who occupied the city for most of the next three centuries. Belgrade became the capital of the kingdom of Serbia in 1882 and the capital of Yugoslavia after World War I. In World War II it was severely damaged by the German occupation. The largest city of the former Yugoslavia (reconstituted in 1991 as Serbia and Montenegro), Belgrade is the industrial, political and cultural center of the country. It is noted for its parks, palaces, museums and churches. The National Museum is on Republic Square. One Turkish mosque remains from the 20 built in previous centuries.
