Pesaro is the hometown of opera composer Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868). Rossini left all he had to this city in east-central Italy's Marche Region. That legacy is evident in the local Rossini Museum and the Rossini Theatre, but especially in Europe's second largest music event. The Rossini Opera Festival attracts world famous singers and thousands of music lovers to Pesaro each August. Situated on the Adriatic Sea, Pesaro's cityscape has a medieval center, and becomes increasingly modern the closer you get to the beach. Pesaro is home to around 95,000 people. The local economy is driven by agricultural marketing, a shipyard, plus the manufacture of motorcycle parts and furniture. Moving west in the same province brings us to Urbino. It's a university town and hub of the Italian Renaissance, thanks to the enlightened Duke Federico di Montefeltro, who attracted some of Italy's most talented artists and craftsmen to Urbino during the 15th century. They built one sharp palace. Also called the Reggia Umanistica (humanistic palace), Urbino's Ducal Palace is important for its architectural proportions and innovations, which included hydraulics and a sewer system. Fortifying ramparts still surround Urbino, with its narrow streets, a city built of stone on a hill above the Metauro Valley. Inside the Ducal Palace, the National Gallery of the Marches features paintings by Piero della Francesca, Raffaello, and other important artists. Local cultural appeal is further enhanced by the University of Urbino, offering Italian language courses for visitors in the summer. Tourism is Urbino's main industry, climaxing in early August with the Ducal Fair.
