Among other claims to fame, Szeged is noted for its salami, and that most distinctive of Hungarian spices, paprika. (Look for "Pride of Szeged" brand paprika in a supermarket near you!) The Tisza River played a major role in Szeged's development from an 11th century trading center, especially since a flood in 1879 devastated the city. With financial help from all over Europe, Szeged was rebuilt in modern architectural styles of that day. So now the cityscape juxtaposes Art Nouveau with the medieval style of the Tower of St. Demetrius and the Gothic style of the Franciscan church and monastery. Szeged lies on Hungary's south-central border (2.5 hours by train from Budapest), and serves as commercial and cultural center for a region that includes parts of Romania and Yugoslavia. It's home to around 200,000 people, 15,000 of whom are students at the city's varied and prestigious higher education institutions. In summer, Szeged's open air theatre in front of Memorial Cathedral attracts visitors from all over Europe -- 4,000 per night, in fact, to take in opera, dance, and orchestra programs. Yet, good recreation facilities and a mild, sunny climate do make this Great Hungarian Plain city a fine place to be anytime of year.
